Odisha: Protests Erupt Over Alleged Broken Promises by Vedanta Company

Kalahandi | YNN (Nilesh Kumar Nag): A significant protest broke out in Kalahandi district over allegations of broken promises by the Vedanta Company. Local residents, who were displaced to make way for the company’s operations, claim they have been mistreated and denied the benefits they were promised.

According to reports, the Vedanta Company acquired land from local residents for its operations, promising to provide jobs and other benefits. However, many of these promises have allegedly gone unfulfilled.

Protesters claim that the company has forced them to work for a subsidiary company, PAPL, at low wages, while also hiring workers from other districts at higher rates. They further allege that the company has failed to provide permanent employment to displaced families as promised.

The protest turned heated when PAPL Company employees attempted to enter the Vedanta premises. Local residents blocked their entry, leading to a tense standoff. The police were called in to intervene and defuse the situation.
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing tensions between local communities and large corporations operating in the region. It remains to be seen whether the Vedanta Company will address the protesters’ grievances and fulfill its promises.
