Kalahandi’s Pride: Baidyaraj Pabitra Sabar Conferred ‘Baraputra Samman’ at Ghumura Festival

Bhawanipatna: In a heartwarming recognition of selfless service and indigenous healing wisdom, veteran traditional healer Baidyaraj Pabitra Sabar from Tolabrahmani village under Narla block was honoured with the prestigious ‘Kalahandi Baraputra Samman-2026’ during the 28th edition of the Kalahandi Utsav ‘Ghumura’.

The award was presented to Mr Sabar amid thunderous applause at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium here, on the Rendo Majhi stage, by the Collector and other dignitaries. He received a citation and a memento in honour of his extraordinary contribution to society.

For over five decades, the humble healer has been a ray of hope for thousands battling life-threatening ailments. Using time-tested traditional Cherimooli (herbal root) remedies rooted in ancient Ayurvedic traditions, he has successfully treated numerous challenging conditions — from cancer and kidney disorders to liver ailments, arthritis, blood-related diseases, and more — often bringing relief where modern medicine had limited solutions.

Patients from far-flung corners of Kalahandi district and even neighbouring states continue to flock to his doorstep, earning him the affectionate title of a beloved kabiraj (folk physician). His selfless, no-frills approach — treating the poor without expectation of reward — has made him a living legend in the region.

Here are glimpses of traditional healers preserving Odisha’s herbal heritage, much like Baidyaraj Sabar’s lifelong dedication:

The Kalahandi Utsav ‘Ghumura’, a grand celebration of the district’s rich tribal and folk culture, provided the perfect backdrop for this honour. The festival, which showcases everything from soul-stirring Ghumura dance performances to local arts and traditions, continues to unite the community in pride and joy.

As news of the award spread, congratulations poured in from all quarters for the soft-spoken healer. Intellectuals, locals, and admirers in Kalahandi are now vociferously demanding that the Government of India confer the Padma Shri — the nation’s fourth-highest civilian honour — upon Baidyaraj Pabitra Sabar, whose work has brought healing and hope to countless lives beyond state borders.

In an era when modern healthcare often falls short for rural masses, stories like Shri Sabar’s remind us of the enduring power of India’s traditional knowledge systems. Kalahandi has every reason to celebrate one of its finest sons.
