Family of Deceased Receives ₹2 Lakh PMSBY Insurance Payout from SBI, Behera

Kalahandi, YNN (Rajat Bansal): The family of a beneficiary who tragically lost his life to a lightning strike has been provided with an insurance payout under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) by the Behera branch of the State Bank of India. On 29 May last year, Kamant Chandan (28), a resident of Tentulipada village in the Dhanrpur GP of Kalahandi district’s Dharmagarh block, was fatally struck by lightning. The son of Chandra Chandan and Phulmati Chandan, Kamant was a mason by profession. On that fateful day, he sought shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm, only to be struck by lightning, resulting in his untimely death.

Aware of various government schemes, Kamant had enrolled in the PMSBY through the Behera branch of the State Bank of India, paying an annual premium of just ₹20. His foresight paid off as his father, Chandra Chandan, was handed a cheque for ₹2 lakh by bank officials today as compensation for his loss. The cheque was presented in the presence of Behera Sarpanch Kumudini Gainta, Branch Manager Debasish Jena, and Bank Assistant Prakash Thakur. Chandra expressed his gratitude to the bank for the support during this difficult time.

The PMSBY, a government-backed accident insurance scheme, requires an annual premium of only ₹20. It provides ₹2 lakh in the event of death or total disability due to an accident, and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. Branch Manager Debashish Jena urged the public to take advantage of this affordable scheme, highlighting its accessibility through banks or online registration. The payout serves as a testament to the scheme’s role in offering financial security to families in times of crisis.
