Gourahari’s stories are filled with many peculiarities
Kolkata,YNN (Rajat Bansal): Eminent Odia author Gourahari Das’ short stories are filled with human feelings, contemporary issues, human pathos, political shadows, village stories, happiness and sorrow of the middle-class, relationships, human infatuation and disillusionment, the impact of globalization, corruption, superstition and many peculiarities. The theme, imagery, and style of Gourahari’s stories are unique. His words are very effective in blending tradition with modernity. The characters of his stories are capable of awakening human thoughts and consciousness. These are the views expressed by the guests and speakers at the book discussion programme organized by the joint initiative of Nachiketa Foundation Trust, Bhubaneswar, Bengali Department and Anudita Translation Cell of Women’s Christian College, Kolkata. The programme held at the Women’s Christian College auditorium was welcomed by Jinia Ray, Head of the Bengali Department of the college. The Secretary of the college, Professor Ajanta Paul, presided over the programme. Eminent storyteller Gourahari Das gave an introduction about his literature and the Bengali translation of two short story collections penned by him. Abhisek Rath ;presented an Introductory remark. Joining as the guest of honour, Dr. Chandrashekhar Hota, Secretary, Odisha Sahitya Academy, said that Gourahari Das’ stories capture the sweet memories of the past, speak about the present and show the way to the future. ‘Kacher Putul aru Anyanya Galpa’ was discussed in detail by the translator of the book, Ajit Kumar Patra. Similarly, the book ‘Kanta aru Anyanya Galpa’ was discussed by the translator, Professor Krishna Bhattacharya. Another guest speaker, Shyamal Bhattacharya, spoke about the relationship and exchange between the Odia and Bengali languages. Noted Odia writer Arabinda Ray spoke about the features of Gourahari’s stories. Teacher in Charge of the college Kushal Andrews Biswas was present on the dais. Dr Surojit Behara, Assistant Professor of the Bengali Department of the college delivered the concluding remarks. At the end, noted Odia writer Safalya Nandi proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was coordinated by writer Kshetrabasi Naik. Dr Chandana Majumdar and Suchandra Bhaduri helped in the felicitation to the guests. Many eminent Odia and Bengali writers and literature lovers attended the programme.
