Prof Indra Nath Choudhuri, former Secretary of Sahitya Akademi passes away

New Delhi (Rajat Banshal): It is with immense sadness and grief that Sahitya Akademi receives the news of passing away of distinguished writer, scholar, editor, translator and its former Secretary today, 12 November 2024. Prof Choudhuri was one of the finest literary administrators of the country and his tenure as Secretary of Sahitya Akademi and as the Director of Nehru Centre in London firmly cemented his place as a Cultural Administrator par excellence. 

Before joining Sahitya Akademi, he taught in the Delhi University and also taught at DBHP, Hyderabad as well as at the University of Bucharest briefly and was a visiting professor in many prestigious universities of the country. He wrote widely on many aspects of culture including literature and religion, was the bilingual writer, translated important works and also edited prestigious anthologies. He was the ICCR first Tagore Chair at Edinburgh Napier University, Edinburgh, UK for two years (2013-2015). During his tenure, he has extensively delivered lectures at different universities and organisations and also published several research papers in different anthologies. 

He will be forever remembered by the literary lovers all over the world for taking up, revising and bringing out seminal Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature. Prof Choudhuri might have shed his mortal coil but will live in the hearts and memories of millions through his countless works. 

Sahitya Akademi joins thousands of literary connoisseurs in mourning his death and pays utmost respect to Prof Indra Nath Choudhuri for his selfless and extraordinary service to Indian Literature.
